Fil-American Lauren Hoffman failed in her bid to advance to the semifinals of the women’s 400 meters when action kicked off in the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships on Friday, March 1, in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 24-year-old national record-holder timed 54.66 seconds to finish fifth in her heats and 21st overall in the 24-player race where the Top 12 athletes will earn slots to the next round.
Her time was three seconds slower than top qualifier Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands, who clocked 51.31sec.
Austrian Susanne Gogl-Walli came in second with a new national record of 51.43sec, while hometown bet Laviai Nielsen was at third with 51.82sec.
Hoffman’s performance was far slower than her previous marks, where she reset the Philippine indoor record twice the past two months in South Carolina, United States -- at the Clemson Bob Pollock Invitational where she posted 53.91sec last January and at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational where she finished 53.71sec early last month.
Meanwhile, two more Filipinos are scheduled to see action in the global showpiece with Fil-Spaniard John Cabang Tolentino competing in the men’s 60m hurdles on Saturday, March 2, and world-class pole vaulter EJ Obiena taking center stage on Sunday, March 3.
