Phivolcs detects magnitude 5.9 quake in Surigao del Sur

A 5.9-magnitude offshore earthquake struck near Surigao del Sur on Friday afternoon, March 1, based on the preliminary data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs said the earthquake, which was recorded at 5:29 p.m., had its epicenter 75 kilometers (km) southeast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, and occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter.
Its instruments recorded the tremor at Intensity III (weak) in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
However, it does not expect aftershocks to occur.
