House Speaker Martin Romualdez--also known as "Mr. Rice"--brought to Palawan's 3rd district some P12 million worth of rice and cash aid on Friday, March. 1.
Romualdez is Leyte's 1st district congressman and the caretaker of the particular district in Palawan that used to be handled by the late Rep. Edward Hagedorn.
"It is a duty I embrace with the utmost seriousness-to ensure that you the heart and soul of our community-are supported and uplifted during these trying times," said Romualdez, leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives.
Romualdez led the ceremonial distribution of assistance to over 2,200 indigents identified as beneficiaries under the Cash and Rice Distribution (CARD) program at Palawan's Provincial Capitol Convention Center.
Each beneficiary received P3,000 worth of cash aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), along with five kilograms of rice from the Office of the House Speaker, or a total package of about P7 million.
Romualdez thanked DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian for the timely assistance extended to the beneficiaries, which included fire victims from Puerto Princesa. He also expressed appreciation for the warm welcome of the locals.
"Maliit na ambag lamang ito para sa araw-araw na pangangailangan ninyo, pero malaking hakbang tungo sa pagbangon ng inyong komunidad," the Speaker said.
(This is just a humble contribution for your daily needs, but a huge step toward bringing the community back on its feet.)

Romualdez earned the Mr. Rice moniker during an earlier trip to Sultan Kudarat wherein he led the distribution of a whopping 500,000 kilos of rice. Sultan Kudarat Governor Pax Mangudadatu was the one who came up with the name.
“Sa ilalim ng Bagong Pilipinas movement, wala pong maiiwan, lahat kasama sa pag-unlad,” Romualdez said during the simultaneous launch of the CARD program and the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair (BPSF) in the province Sunday, Feb. 25.
(Under the Bagong Pilipinas movement, nobody will be left behind, we move together toward progress)
The governor also affirmed Sultan Kudarat’s support for President Marcos’ Bagong Pilipinas vision, which aims for a peaceful and progressive Philippines.
“Ito na po ang pinakamalaking distribution ng bigas sa kasaysayan ng aming probinsya, kaya kung mamarapatin po ninyo maliban sa Mr. Speaker, nais ko kayong tawaging Mr. Rice,” Mangudadatu said.
(This is the biggest distribution of rice in the history of our province, so if you don't mind, aside from Mr. Speaker, I would also like to call you 'Mr. Rice'.)
“This is the value we place on rice distribution to the sectors who need them," Romualdez said. Rice is the Filipino staple food.
