Go Time: Pacio, Brooks set for explosive rematch at ONE 166: Qatar

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio and Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks have felt the love from fight fans in the Middle East, and now’s the time to repay them by living up to the hype.

Brooks and Pacio will look to steal the show when they clash for the American’s ONE Strawweight MMA World Championship at ONE 166: Qatar this Friday, March 1, inside Lusail Sports Arena. 

The Filipino has experienced home-court advantage of sorts since stepping foot in Qatar, owing to the large number of Filipino expatriates living in the peninsular emirate. 

The reception has made Pacio even more grateful. 

“Being one of the athletes in ONE Championship makes me so proud that I belong to the greatest and largest martial arts organization in the world,” Pacio said in the ONE 166 pre-fight press conference. 

“Competing here, I believe God put me on this platform to inspire the next generation,” he added. “If you have dreams, go chase them. The Filipinos can expect that I will bring home the gold belt this Friday.” 

Pacio, all in all, expects the crowd to stand firmly behind him the moment he touches gloves with Brooks, so he plans to win it for them. 

“Honestly, I feel like I’m in Manila right now. There’s a lot of Filipinos,” Pacio said.

“In every country that I compete in, there are a lot of Filipinos. You cannot remove Filipinos [anywhere]. In every country I go to, there are a lot of Filipinos supporting us. I am more motivated this time.”

If winning for the Philippines is Pacio’s main motivation, then Brooks plans to play the Grinch in what’s expected to be Christmas Day for Filipino fight fans. 

Brooks loves the support this fight has been getting, but he vows to make fans understand that Pacio’s era is now over. 

“Joshua Pacio has a lot of Filipino support and I appreciate that. I appreciate people that love our sport and love that Josh was a World Champion, but times change. Jarred Brooks is here to stay,” he said.

He plans to prove that by finishing Pacio definitely this time around. 

“People are underestimating my hunger and my goals in ONE Championship. Now, I’m here to show Joshua Pacio who is the best. I want to knock him out and I want to finish him,” he said. 

“I’m gonna finish him this time. It doesn’t matter, at the end of the day, Filipino or not, I will make you guys love me – period.”
