Senior Insp. Edgar R. Tañajura Jr., chief of the Public Information Unit (PIU) of BFP-Bicol, said they recorded 119 fire incidents from January to February, 25 more compared to the 94 in the first two months last year.
He said that 50 percent of these fire incidents involved residential houses while the remaining were business establishments, electric posts, and forest fires.
Tañajura hopes that fire incidents would be lower this March which is Fire Prevention Month. BFP-Bicol recorded 77 fire incidents this month last year.
He said that electrical connections are the No. 1 cause of fires in March as many people use appliances to cool off.
Among the biggest fire incidents in the first two months of this year in Bicol was in Naga City involving seven residential houses and reached the third alarm, Tañajura said.
Tañajura appealed to the people to cooperate and be more responsible to enable the region to attain zero or fewer fire incidents in 2024.
This year's observance of Fire Prevention Month in Bicol kicks off on March 5. Various activities will be held such as trainings and fire safety seminars.
