CAPAS, TARLAC -- Filipino tankers Jamesray Ajido and Heather White made it count until the very end as the swimming leg of the 11th Asian Age Group Championships wrapped up at the New Clark City on Thursday, Feb. 29 here.
The 15-year-old Ajido, who gave the host country its first-ever gold medal in the continental tilt in the 12-14 boys' 100m butterfly event, timed 25.50sec in the 50m race to settle for silver behind Japan’s Yusei Nishiono (25.43sec).
“Masaya naman po ang experience, medyo 'di lang po sumakto sa touch pad kaya ‘di ko na-touch ng maayos. Pero okay lang naman po nakuha ko po 'yung silver,” said Ajido, who concluded his stint with three medals, including one gold and bronze.
“Nagpapasalamat po ako sa mga learnings na nakuha ko ngayong taon, mas pagbubutihan ko pa po sa mga susunod kong competition,” he added.
Meanwhile,White copped her second bronze medal in 15-17 girls’ 100m freestyle after timing 57.86sec behind Japan’s Rimika Taira (56.81) and Hong Kong’s Gilaine Ma (56.86).
The Fil-British swimmer was happy with her performance, noting that she plans to join the national team for the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand next year.
“I was glad I achieved what I was capable of. I'm trying to aim for the SEA Games and I know there’s a qualifier in August, so for the next couple of months I’m going to be practicing and training really hard for [SEAG],” said White.
The Philippines ended its run in swimming at 12th place with 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals in the continental showpiece.
Japan dominated the contest with 36 gold, 20 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Kazakhstan took second place with 20 gold, 11 silver, 5 bronze, followed by Thailand (18-12-23), Hong Kong (15-17-13) and Vietnam (14-17-23).
