VP Sara visits landslide victims in Davao

DAVAO CITY – Vice President Sara Z. Duterte visited on Friday, February 9, landslide victims in Davao de Oro province.

Duterte first visited Barangay Masara in Maco and sympathized with the victims of the landslide on Tuesday evening, February 6.

She also visited families staying at Nuevo Iloco Elementary School in Mawab following a landslide on Thursday evening, February 8.

Duterte said she visited evacuees and those affected by the landslide in Mawab to ensure their condition and provide temporary shelter.

“With the local government officials, we spoke with the affected families and assured them that our office is their partner in providing for their needs,” Duterte said.

Duterte stressed the importance of preparation and proactive measures, such as preemptive evacuation if areas of residence are identified as hazard-prone, to avoid tragedies.

Meanwhile, personnel of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in the Davao region, with other government officials, conducted an aerial survey in Maco.

OCD-Davao information officer Karlo Alexis Puerto said the aerial survey, with the support of military personnel, was conducted to support search and rescue operations on the ground.

Puerto said the team will come up with an assessment report on the effects of the landslide to help national and local government agencies mitigate future landslide risks in the area.

The incident in Masara has sparked offline and online discussions regarding the consequences of mining, which played a role in the destabilization of soil and terrain in Davao de Oro.

Some municipalities in Davao de Oro experienced landslides and floods amid heavy rainfall, notably the towns of Maragusan, Nabunturan, and Monkayo.
