Three events kicked off the weekend tournament with national team members stamping their class in their respective events.
In the men’s epee event, Jose Noelito Jr. ruled the event. Fellow national team members Ergina Lee Eigran and Timothy Dale Gonzales completed the top three places, with Eigran taking the silver and Gonzales settling for the bronze.
Noelito drew a bye to start the tournament and gained safe passage to the table of 32. The SEA Games veteran proved too much for Malinao Agasti in the table of 32 and continued his dominance in the table of 16 against Obzunar Aurell Florence to advance.
The 26-year-old would dispose of Lumahan Darylle Joshua next to book his seat in the semifinals.
In the men’s foil event, it was likewise an all-national show. Nathaniel Perez took the top honors with Samuel Tranquilian settling for second place. Prince John Francis Felipe took home the bronze.
The men’s sabre event saw CJ Concepcion bested Eric Brando II to bag the gold. John Paul Dayro wound up with the bronze after defeating Xavier Matthew Reyes.
In the women’s side, it national team fencers also showed the way.
Ivy Claire Dinoy topped the women’s epee event, downing Mickyle Rein Bustos and Hanniel Abella. Bustos finished second while Abella took third spot.
Jylyn Nicanor ruled the women’s saber event, outpointing fellow national player Allaine Nicole Cortey for the gold. Queen Denise Dalmacio finished third in the field.
For the women’s foil event, Janna Allysah Catantan reigned supreme to take home the gold. Two other national team fencers, Sophia Shekainah and Wilhelmina Lozada, took the silver and the bronze.
After a successful first leg, the Philippine Fencing Association plans to organize and hold more events this 2024.
