MEDIUM RARE

Everyone around him wore red, but not the birthday boy, who came in blue, one of two colors favored for the Year of the Dragon. Not that Sebastian Chua cares about such whimsicalities, for what you see is what you get. Straightforward, sincere, honest-to-goodness frank (without being rude), qualities of a trustworthy businessman.
Basty marked his birthday with hundreds of his friends last Thursday, and the older he gets the bigger his parties grow. As will be attested to by former President Estrada and Senator Jinggoy Estrada, Senator Cynthia Villar, Tessie Sy Coson, Kim Henares, Bam Aquino, Ronald Llamas, Korina Sanchez Roxas. Basty’s daughter Sandy played hostess and secretary Clarita managed the foot traffic in and out of East Ocean Palace, appropriately and majestically dressed up to welcome the Dragon.
Basty’s former company, Star Paper, was at one time the biggest paper supplier in this part of Southeast Asia (when the printed word ruled the civilized world), which was when my book, Etiquette for Mistresses, was born in 1992, with Greg Garcia as publisher. Subsequently, the book underwent 16 printings (a few more followed, but by then we had stopped counting). I don’t think any other book under any title has surpassed that record. I recall this little footnote because I – we – could not have found a nicer, sweeter, more professional guy than Basty – thank you, Basty, you are the godfather of those 50-plus mistresses in the book!
Today, Basty’s business involves the sale of hi-tech tools from cellphones and cameras to robotic floor polishers and other household/office equipment.
When we were kids, we used to make fun of cousins and classmates whose birthdays fell in February because it was the month with fewer than 30 days, ergo February-borns “lacked something.” However, as it was bound to happen, two of the dearest people in my life, my mother and my father-in-law, were February-born, and no way did they lack anything, not brains, heart, spirit or soul.
Currently, among my favorite people are ML (born Feb. 4) and MOH (Feb. 6). Raul Sunico (Feb. 29) is the only leap year baby in my circle. Rodrigo Duterte’s “most intelligent mind in the room,” THE one and only Johnny Ponce Enrile, will turn 100 this coming Valentine’s Day. Mabuhay!
