TACLOBAN CITY – African Swine Fever cases have been recorded in three municipalities in Southern Leyte.
The Provincial Veterinary Office said five barangays in Silago with 94 hog breeders were affected.
A total of 489 hogs were culled while the provincial government prepared a P4-million indemnification for the affected hog growers.
In Malitbog, 448 hogs owned by 48 growers in three barangays were culled while a P2-million indemnification fund was allotted to them.
Meanwhile, in Bontoc, three barangays were also affected based on the ongoing validation.
In a recent meeting of the provincial ASF executive committee, it resolved to strengthen and intensify ASF checkpoints on highways and ports in Liloan and Padre Burgos.
It was also agreed to have weekly monitoring of hogs in every barangay by deputized biosecurity officers.
Last year, over 400 hogs raisers were affected by ASF in 13 municipalities and one city in the province.
Over 2,000 hogs within the 500-meter radius were culled to prevent the disease from spreading.
