Police Lt. Col. Roberto Indiape Jr., Kabankalan police chief, said the bus stopped in an uphill slope as its inspector disembarked from the vehicle.
However, the vehicle suddenly moved in reverse, prompting the bus driver to apply the brakes.
He failed to stop the bus as the vehicle encountered mechanical trouble until it fell on its side.
Indiape said the bus was travelling from the city proper to Barangay Bantayan when the accident happened.
Thirty-four passengers and the bus conductor sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital while the bus driver was placed under police custody.
Jade Seballos, media and legal officer of Vallacar Transit Inc. (VTI), said they have extended medical assistance to all the victims. She said they will conduct their own investigation on the incident.
