Murder complaint filed vs driver of hit-and-run vehicle

CEBU CITY – A complaint for murder was filed on Thursday, February 8, against the driver of the vehicle that figured in a fatal hit-and-run incident in Barangay Kamputhaw here.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) filed the complaint against Aaron Karl Tan before the Cebu City Prosecutor's Office.

Tan is the owner of Mazda CX-7 with license plates YKK-161 but he denied driving the vehicle when it hit Jeslar Uriel Larumbe on Queens Road around 6 a.m. on Sunday, February 4.

Police Col. Ireneo Dalogdog, chief of CCPO, said witnesses and evidence would debunk Tan’s claims that he was not the driver of the vehicle when the incident happened.

“He is the prime suspect that witnesses pointed to and the evidence that we have gathered,” said Dalogdog.

Police Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare, spokesperson of Police Regional Office-Central Visayas chief Police Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin, said that the pieces of evidence against the suspect are strong.

"They (investigators) have already established the identity of the suspect, they have CCTVs. They have conducted tedious backtracking of CCTVs. We have eyewitnesses who identified the suspect and how the incident came about,” Pelare said.

Pelare defended the police from criticisms why they took long before a complaint was filed against the suspect.

“We will not compromise the quality of investigation just because there is pressure from the public, we will make sure that the one that will be charged is the one who committed the offense,” said Pelare.
