2 dead in tricycle-pick-up truck collision

TACLOBAN CITY – A barangay kagawad (councilor) and his passenger were killed in a collision between a tricycle and a pick-up truck in Barangay Bagolibas, Santa Rita, Samar, on Thursday, February 8.

Fatalities were identified as barangay kagawad Joel Cabotin of Barangay San Isidro, Santa Rita, driver of the tricycle, and his passenger, Maria Mae Mendaño, 26, from Barangay Parasanon, Pinabacdao, Samar.

Investigation said the tricycle encroached on the opposite lane to avoid a bumpy portion and the pickup truck switched to the other lane to avoid the tricycle.

The tricycle returned to its lane but collided with the pick-up truck which swerved to the left and hit a motorcycle parked on the road shoulder.

The driver and passenger of the pickup were taken to the Basey District Hospital in Basey, Samar where they were declared dead due to serious injuries.

The other passenger of the tricycle, Catherine Mendaño, 28, was also injured and taken to a hospital in this city for further treatment.

The pick-truck driver was injured and taken into custody by the police.
