Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo can't help but recall the late Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Susan "Toots" Ople following the agency's successful disbursement of the labor claims of the displaced overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Saudi Arabia.
As of Feb. 6, at least 843 checks amounting to ₱691.45 million have been cleared by Landbank, providing long overdue relief to the affected OFWs and their families. The migrant workers were retrenched back in 2015.
“The DMW has worked their fingers to the bone to achieve this milestone," Salo, chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, said in a statement Tuesday, Feb. 7.
"I wish to commend and thank OIC [Officer-in-charge] USec. [Hans Leo] Cacdac, as well as the late DMW Secretary Ople, for their dedication in resolving the labor claims of OFWs in Saudi Arabia through numerous bilateral talks and going through the meticulous process of collating every detail to ensure the rightful claim of each OFW,” Salo said.
The beloved Ople, daughter of the late former senator Blas Ople, died at the age of 61 Aug. 22, 2023 due to complications from breast cancer.
She was the first secretary of the DMW, which was formed only in February 2022.
Salo also extended his deepest gratitude to President Marcos for his unwavering support and commitment to the welfare of OFWs worldwide.
“We are thankful to President Marcos for his dedication in serving and safeguarding the rights and well-being of OFWs and their families. His strong international and diplomatic relations with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammad Bin Salman led to the swift resolution of the matter and the release of pending salaries, wages and end-of-service benefits,” he said.
Salo expressed his gratitude to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, the Overseas Welfare Workers Association (OWWA) and to all government officials who played integral roles in achieving this accomplishment.
The veteran lawmaker also thanked the Saudi government for being true to their word, and for valuing the services of the OFWs by providing them appropriate compensation.
