House Deputy Majority Leader TGP Party-list Rep. Jose "Bong" Teves Jr. has called out Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva over what the former described as hurtful comments toward his fellow congressmen or House members.
"Pupuntuhin ko na, ang sinabi ng isang senador, Si Senator Joel Villanueva my fraternity brother. Masakit po yung sinasabi mo," Teves said in a press briefing Tuesday, Feb. 6.
(I will specify. The words of a senator, Senator Joel Villanueva, my fraternity brother. What you said was hurtful.)
According to reports last week, Villanueva said that senators like himself cannot be compared to party-list congressmen supposedly due to the huge disparity in the votes that they receive during polls. He said the two kinds of solons were like "apples and oranges".
"Napakasakit po noon (That is very hurtful)," a visibly upset Teves said.
"Unang-una, yung nagsasalita noon, saan ba sila nanggaling? Di ba naging congressman din siya, naging party-list din siya," the ranking congressman noted.
(First of all, where did the person speaking come from? Wasn't he a party-list congressman before?)
Villanueva served as CIBAC Party-list representative from 2002 to 2010. His father, Bro. Eddie Villanueva, is currently occupying the party-list's seat in the 19th Congress.
Teves underscored that party-list solons--like senators--are elected via nationwide vote.
And then there's the senators' penchant for seeking the help of both district and party-list congressmen during election season, Teves noted.
"Lumalapit kayo sa mga district congressman, lumalapit kayo sa mga party-list members para humingi ng tulong na iboto kayo. Ngayon sasabihin ninyo, party-list lang kayo? Congressman lang kayo? Masakit yun para sa amin yun," he said.
(You approach district congressmen and party-list members to help you get votes. And now you say, you're just from a party-list? You're just a congressman? For us, that is hurtful.)
Villanueva gave these remarks amid the apparent "word war" between the two legislative chambers on the topic of the People’s Initiative (PI) for Charter change (Cha-cha).
Teves also took offense with the Senate majority leader's claim that the chiefs-of-staff of House members have been busy fetching PI signature sheets from Forbes Park in Makati City and causing traffic jams in the area.
"Hindi po totoo yun. Even my chief-of-staff, hindi ko inutusan na pumunta ng Forbes Park," he said.
(That's not true. Even my chief-of-staff hasn't received ordered from me to go to Forbes park.)
