Elreen Ando intensified her bid for a return trip to the Olympics after snaring two silver medals in the 2024 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Monday, Feb. 5.

The 25-year-old Cebuana posted a total lift of 213 kilograms to finish second behind eventual gold medalist Kim Il Gyong of North Korea, who dominated the women’s 59kg division with an impressive lift of 225 kilos.
Ando, who competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but in a heavier weight category at 64kg, actually struggled in snatch where she failed her first two attempts at 93 kilos before finally completing it on her final attempt to remain in contention.
Running fifth heading into the clean and jerk, Ando registered 120 kilos after her final attempt at 124 kilos was unsuccessful.
But it was good enough for her to win the silver medal, with Indonesian Natasya Beteyob at close second with a total lift of 212 kilos.
Ando’s performance, however, was far lower than her performance at last year’s world championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where she finished eighth with 222 kilos. In that tournament, she lifted 100 kilos in snatch and 122 kilos in clean and jerk.
Meanwhile, Vanessa Sarno struts her wares when she competes in the women’s 71kg in a few days.
The tournament is part of the qualification process for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
