World champion gymnast Carlos Yulo hopes to start working under a new Japanese coach as he sets his sights on the ultimate prize – an Olympic gold in Paris.

The 23-year-old little dynamo is currently on a brief training stint abroad where he is set to meet Japanese coach Tomohanu Sano to work on their respective schedules in time for crucial tournaments leading to the Olympics.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion said Yulo and Sano have previously met after the latter came to the Philippines last year to meet the Filipino champion gymnast.
Yulo left last Jan. 22 for a training camp in Korea and is scheduled to leave for Japan for another short training stint on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Already qualified for the Olympics, Yulo needs to re-focus and toughen himself after struggling at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium last year.
He was a big disappointment in the annual tournament that saw him falter in his pet event – the floor exercise – where he finished fourth.
He used to be one of the feared competitors in this discipline.
The competition also came months after Yulo parted ways with Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, his longtime mentor who molded him to become a world champion.
According to Carrion, Yulo is scheduled to see action in a pair of FIG World Cup Series competitions in Baku, Azerbaijan in March and in Doha, Qatar in April as well as in training cups in Spain, United Kingdom and Australia en route to his participation in the Olympics.
Yulo hopes for a podium finish in Paris after coming close at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where he finished fourth in vault.
