No indications yet to raise Alert Level 3 in Mayon Volcano — Phivolcs chief
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there are still no signs that Mayon Volcano's current status should be raised from Alert Level 2 to 3, following the phreatic eruption that occurred on Feb. 4.

In an interview with Teleradyo Serbisyo on Monday, Feb. 5, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said the alert level of Mayon Volcano will not be changed yet.
"Hindi namin babaguhin iyong alert level for now. Again, wala tayong indikasyon na kailangan nating itaas iyong Alert Level from 2 to 3 (We will not change the alert level for now. Again, there were no indications for a need to change its alert level from 2 to 3)," he said.
Moverover, Bacolcol confirmed that the eruption would not cause significant damage.
"Hanggang ngayon ay wala kaming natatanggap na ulat na may volcanic ash na umabot sa may barangay malapit sa Mayon Volcano (Until now, we haven't received any reports that volcanic ash reached the communities near the Mayon Volcano)," he said.
Bacolcol also assured the public that Mayon Volcano showed no signs of possible magmatic eruption.
"Maganda analogy riyan would be kawali na may mantika tapos nabuhusan ng tubig—nagkakaroon ng steaming, walang magma (A good analogy for that would be a frying pan with cooking oil spilled in with water—there will be steaming, no magma)," he said.
Meanwhile, as no volcanic earthquakes were recorded at Mayon Volcano for the past days, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was still "high" at 621 tons per day since Feb. 2, which is why, Phivolcs will not lower down its status to Alert Level 1, said Bacolcol.
The phreatic eruption, which occurred on Feb. 4 lasted for two minutes and 49 seconds, said Phivolcs.
