A top official of the former president Rodrigo Duterte's Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) has declared in no uncertain terms his support for House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
PDP-Laban President Palawan 2nd district Rep. Jose Alvarez was among the many ranking congressmen who stood on the plenary floor Monday, Feb. 5 to express their backing of Romualdez's leadership.
These expressions of support were in connection with House Resolution (HR) No.1562, which was adopted during plenary session.
Although Alvarez's speech Monday was the shortest, it was still unequivocal in terms of his support for the House chief.
"Jose Alvarez po, kinatawan ng segundo distrito ng Palawan (This is Jose Alvarez, representative of Palawan). I firmly stand to support Resolution 1562 and the leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez. Thank you," he said, before going back to his seat and voting for the adoption of HR No.1562.
The measure is titled, "Resolution expressing unwavering solidarity and support to the leadership of the Honorable Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, and upholding the integrity and honor of the House of Representatives in the face of intense assault from the Senate in violation of the principle of inter-parliamentary courtesy and undue interference in the performance of its legislative and constituent functions.”
Duterte chairs PDP-Laban. He was Philippine president from 2016 to 2022.
The ex-chief executive has been quite "visible" since the latter part of 2023, when he began giving interviews on television. Some of his remarks have been attacks on the House as an institution and on Romualdez himself.
Duterte even went as far as to call the House "the most rotten institution" in the country. Duterte is a former House member.
