Mayor Honey leads Battle for Manila 79th Anniversary celebration

Manila celebrated the 79th Anniversary of the Battle for Manila, to honor the 100,000 lives lost during the World War II battle.
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan led the ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 3, along with the ambassadors from the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, People's Republic of China, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Australia, and the United Mexican States.

The battle was waged for a month from Feb. 3 to March 3, 1945, between Philippine and American forces, and the Imperial Japanese forces.
It is widely considered to be one of the "greatest tragedies" of before World War II ended because 100,000 Filipinos, including children, perished.
Police said around 200 people gathered at the Plazuela de Santa Isabel, Intramuros on Sunday, to pay their respects to victims killed in the street battles.
Memorare Manila Monument was erected at the Plazuela de Santa Isabel in honor of the war.
“The loss of the lives of our countrymen is as far greater blow than the destruction of structures in our city. All buildings and homes are being rebuilt, while life can never be restored,” the mayor said.
