Two consecutive earthquakes jolted Surigao del Sur on Thursday morning, Feb. 29, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake at 8:10 a.m. and traced the epicenter 83 kilometers (km) southeast of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.
It said the tremor, which occurred at a depth of nine kilometers, was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs also said it was "strong" at Intensity V in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
Meanwhile, another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred at 8:23 a.m., also in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.

Phivolcs located its epicenter 77 km southeast of Cagwait, while it occurred at a depth of 15 km.
The tremor was also "strong" at Intensity V in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, while it was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
Both earthquakes may not cause damage to property nor trigger possible aftershocks, said Phivolcs.
