Philippine National Cancer Summit highlights importance of early detection in transforming care
The 2024 Philippine National Cancer Summit (PNCS) emerged as a beacon of hope in the nation's battle against cancer, a spotlight on the transformative impact of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA) in bolstering early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

In a statement released on Thursday, Feb. 29, it highlighted the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to combat cancer, citing its contribution to 7.84 percent of the Philippines' disease burden and ranking as the "third highest" cause of Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY).
Notably, breast cancer prevails as the most common cancer among women, while lung cancer stands as the most prevalent and deadly among men.
NICCA’s role
Enacted in 2019, it said that NICCA serves as a comprehensive framework to ensure the availability of quality and affordable cancer care services.
In line with this, the summit, themed “Advancing Integrated Cancer Care Systems for the Filipino,” echoed the objectives of NICCA, aiming to enhance survival rates and alleviate financial strains on patients and their families.
Philippine College of Surgeons Cancer Commission Foundation (PCS CanCom) Chairperson Dr. Manuel Francisco Roxas emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach involving stakeholders from diverse sectors to elevate cancer care standards.
Moreover, Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Teodoro Herbosa highlighted the government's commitment to promoting health-maintaining behaviors and disease prevention.
He stressed the significance of "early screening measures" and access to timely interventions for improved treatment outcomes.
On the other hand, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos, Jr., underscored the role of local government units (LGUs) in aligning national guidelines with local needs.
Additionally, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte shared the city's efforts in crafting a localized version of NICCA to enhance cancer care at the local level.
Summit impact
Moreover, the PNCS 2024, held at Novotel Araneta, served as a crucial platform for stakeholders to collaborate and exchange innovations in cancer care.
By emphasizing early screening and intervention, the summit aimed to mobilize collective efforts towards a future where cancer is no longer a formidable adversary for Filipinos, ensuring equitable access to essential care and support.
