BUTUAN CITY – No injury or damage was reported in a magnitude-5.6 earthquake that jolted Surigao del Sur on Thursday morning, February 29, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said.

Rescue teams of the provincial government and the towns of Cagwait and Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur have been mobilized to check residents, particularly those residing in coastal areas.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was recorded at 8:10 a.m. and its epicenter was 38 kilometers of north of Hinatuan with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Thirteen minutes later at 8:23 a.m., a magnitude-5.3 tremor occurred and its epicenter was 83 kms south of Cagwait. The earthquake had a shallow depth of only nine kms, Phivolcs said.
It was felt at Intensity V in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and Intensity IV in Bislig City. In instrumental intensity, the earthquake was felt at Intensity II in Bislig City.
These were followed by a magnitude-4.3 earthquake at 9:40 a.m. and its epicenter was 79 kms east Cagwait with a depth of 17 kms.
Hours earlier before 4 a.m., a magnitude-4.1 earthquake rattled Cagwait and its epicenter was 71 kms southeast of Marihatag, Surigao del Sur with a depth of 17 kms.
Phivolcs said these tremors were caused by the Philippine Trench.
