Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao didn’t have to think too much to identify what cost the Elasto Painters the game in their opening assignment against TNT in the 2024 Philippine Cup.

The fiery mentor was quick to point out their free throw shooting woes as the reason for his team’s meltdown in the contest that saw them take control for the most part of the second half.
"We missed 18 free throws and lost by one point. Gusto nating simplehan lang yung analysis nito. Out of the 18, if we could have only made two we could have won the game. So yun ang simple analysis,” Guiao told reporters at the end of the Tropang Giga 108-107 escape.
The Elasto Painters shot a measly 57-percent clip from the foul line, only making 24 of its 42 attempts. A testament to the team’s strange free throw shooting struggles was Andrei Caracut, a steady free throw shooter in his young career, only shooting a 5-of-10 clip from the stripe.
Even head coach Chot Reyes admitted that his team dodged a bullet as he felt the Tropang Giga sent the Elasto Painters too often to the foul line. Fortunately, they were missing.
“I don’t know how we won that game. We were just lucky that Rain or Shine was missing their free throws but we gave way too many free throws. If ROS made half of the free throws that they missed I think we would have lost this ball game easily,” said Reyes.
“We dodged a bullet in this game,” he added.
Guiao, however, refused to dwell on the loss, noting that the game just showed that they can hold their ground against the top contenders of the conference.
In fact, the performance of his young guns in Leonard Santillan and Adrian Nocum, who both notched 20 points in the loss, offered silver lining especially against a TNT side that was complete with its big guns in Jayson Castro, Calvin Oftana, RR Pogoy and new addition Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser.
“We still considered that a good game. It’s just disappointing because we could have beaten a strong team, probably a contender this conference. Kaunting experience pa siguro sa mga bata. We just need to mature quicker, sabi ko nga mataas ang ambisyon namin sa conference na ito,” said Guiao.
“The important thing for us is we know we can stay with the big guns. Sayang malaking isda sana. Nakawala yung malaking isda,” he lamented.
