Lyann De Guzman shows way as Ateneo turns back UP for first win

The Blue Eagles, who were coming off a huge five-set defeat against National University Lady Bulldogs last week, managed to cruise on top this time for their first win under new head coach Sergio Veloso following back-to-back losses.

In a battle of winless Katipunan squads early in the eliminations, Ateneo snapped a six-game losing skid dating back from last season where it missed the Final Four for the first time in 14 years.

Veteran Lyann De Guzman fired a season-high output 24 points off 19 attacks, four blocks and one service ace that went with 11 digs and 18 receptions while Sobe Buena delivered 19 markers on 19 kills.

AC Miner and Zel Tunashima, meanwhile, added an 11-point performance each to steer Ateneo to its breakthrough win.

After being two sets down, the Blue Eagles steadily regained momentum in the crucial third set to eventually seize control the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Steph Bustrillo paced UP with a team-high 17 points on the losing end.

The Fighting Maroons, who were hoping to taste their first victory over the Blue Eagles, slid further to a 14-game losing skid owing 11 of which from their one-win campaign last season.
