As the famous phrase of the late TV host Inday Badiday goes, “Careful, careful!”
House Deputy Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali "Boyet" Gonzales II borrowed this remark as he gave a general warning about pursuing a legislated wage hike.
“The worst that can happen is to give too much hope on our workers na hindi naman kakayanin (that can't be fulfilled). Alam naman natin (We all know), you have to strike a balance yung sumusweldo at saka dun sa nagpapasweldo (between the employee and employer),” Gonzales said in a press briefing on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
“I don't want to sound as a party-pooper pero (but) I would take refuge on the famous words of the late Inday Badiday na (that is) 'Careful, careful,'” he said.
Badiday was a popular journalist and TV host. She died in 2003 at the age of 59.
The veteran legislator notes that proposals of a wage increase are not “as easy as it looks” given its repercussions to businesses.
“On the part of the laborers who woud like to have a wage increase they should also be prepared na may mga kumpanya na hindi makakayanan kaya (that there are companies that cannot afford it) there should be a balance, kaya nga sabi ko (that’s why I said) careful, careful,” said Gonzales.
On Wednesday, the House Committee on Labor and Employment started its discussion on various proposals to increase the salary of minimum wage earners. The measures range from a proposed P150 increase, up to P750.
This was seen as a response to the Senate’s approval of a P100 increase in the daily minimum wage of employees in the private sector a few weeks ago.
Another hearing date had to be scheduled by the committee as the alloted time Wednesday wasn't enough to hear the attending stakeholders.
Gonzales expressed fears that the House and Senate could end up one-upping each other, via “papogian” (in this context, who did it better) on the matter of what wage hIke amount to follow.
“Pataasan nalang ang mangyayari unmindful of the fact that at the end of the day wala tayong ma-aprubahan dahil kasi magiging prohibitive na nga,” he pointed out.
(It will become a competition that's unmindful of the fact that at the end of the day we won't be able to approve anything because it will be prohibitive.)
The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) recently cautioned against the proposed P100 wage hike as it may present financial difficulties to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
MSMEs represent over 99 percent of business establishments and employ 63 percent of the country's workforce.
