Archipelagic nations like the Philippines face both challenges and opportunities in being composed of island clusters and vast oceans. Keeping these island communities connected and united, growing and sustainable, peaceful and orderly, remains the primary business of government leaders and the yardstick by which good governance is often measured and judged.
Connecting islands and ensuring that the communities therein are provided with the same kind and quality of services that mainland communities enjoy remain as the driving force for the establishment of more defined archipelagic sea lanes and baselines to promote and preserve national growth, solidarity and peace. For the Philippines, the need for more established channels through which information, business and economic and cultural exchanges among others can flow, has become more and more pressing in light of the intimidation and arrogance our nation experiences within boundaries that are rightfully ours.
Clearly defined archipelagic sea lanes enable the seamless flow of knowledge, goods and services, and preserves and strengthens, our vital links with other nations. Established maritime routes sustain the growth and exchange of economies and cultures within and even beyond island boundaries.
Needless to say perhaps, archipelagic sea lanes impact a variety of spheres – geopolitical, economic, and cultural. Stronger international cooperation is thus the way forward in order to ensure that these sea lanes serve future generations, guarantee their sustainability and warrant the survival of peoples and cultures.
The twin post-pandemic challenges of recovery and sustainability I think drags along the need for clearer and firmer legislations that pertain to the establishment of archipelagic sea lanes. The shared goal in this is to ensure regional stability and cooperation especially in light of a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape of the world.
Our waters in the Philippine archipelago is a crucial passageway for commerce and communication which stimulates and sustains economic growth not only within the country but more so in the Asia-Pacific region. It is therefore imperative for us to work and unite to ensure that we benefit from the opportunities created by archipelagic sea lanes and address its consequent challenges.
