Senate adopts reso honoring former UN chief Ban Ki-Moon

The Senate on Tuesday, February 27 unanimously adopted Senate Resolution No. 929 honoring the global contributions of South Korean diplomat Ban Ki-Moon, the 8th secretary general of the United Nations General Assembly.

Legarda, in particular, commended Ban for visiting Tacloban City in December 2013 following the devastation brought by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. 

 

“The Philippine Senate, with deep respect and administration, acknowledges the exceptional contributions of Mr. Ban Ki-moon in shaping the global landscape,” the resolution stated.

 

“The visionary leadership of the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations advocated and mobilized world leaders and parliaments for the adoption of various landmark projects, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UNSDGs), highlighting the importance of collective action to address poverty, hunger, inequality, climate crisis, and other pressing issues facing humanity,” it added.

 

Ban was present at the Philippine Senate on Tuesday, together with his wife. At present, Ban chairs the Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future, Boao Forum for Asia, Global Center on Adaptation, and Global Green Growth Institute, among others.

 

Ban served as UN secretary general from 2007 to 2016. 

 

The former UN chief addressed members of the Senate saying he “deeply grateful” for the honor and “very humbled by the unique opportunity” given to deliver a few words before the august chamber.

 

“Indeed, it is incredibly meaningful for me to be here in Manila and be recognized by P.S. Resolution No. 929…I have also heard that this is the very first time that a speaking occasion has been afforded to a visiting foreign dignitary. This is indeed a profound and unforgettable honor for me personally as well,” Ban said.

 

Ban commended the Senate resolution as it also recognizes “the guiding ideals and achievements of the UN.”

 

“The UN and tis pursuit of peace, human rights, and development exemplify the values and principles that I feel we should all espouse to replicate. And for me, this is not abstract,” Ban said.

 

“I have seen the bravery of UN peacekeepers protecting civilians; the heroism of aid workers responding to disasters; and the courage of health specialists providing care in the most dangerous places in the world,” he stressed.

 

At the same time, Ban cited the upcoming the 75th anniversay of diplomatic relations between the Republic of the Philippines and Republic of Korea. 

 

Ban pointed out that when it comes to the UN’s primary role to maintain peace and security, the Korean people embrace special gratitude for the noble sacrifice and great efforts that the Philippine troops during the Korean War.

 

“I sincerely hope that our bilateral relations will continue to be deepened and expanded for the mutual benefit of our two peoples,” the diplomat said.
