P109-M agro-forestry facilities open in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recently opened agro-forestry facilities worth P109 million in central Iloilo province.

A MOUNTAIN community in Calinog town, Iloilo province is one of the recipients of the P109-million agro-forestry projects funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. (DENR-6)

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-6 inaugurated and turned over 10 facilities, including an irrigation system, hanging bridges, an agroforestry value chain facility, and access roads for mountain communities in Calinog, Janiuay, and Lambunao towns.

These Agroforestry Support Facilities (ASF) are part of the DENR Forestland Management Project (FMP), a more than 10-year project funded by JICA.

“These sub-projects are expected to significantly improve not only the mobility of communities especially our people’s organizations, but also to improve the productivity of plantations. This is the main reason why there is an ASF sub-component in the project design. Basically to connect plantations to the markets so that people from the uplands can have alternative sources of income,” said DENR Assistant Secretary Arleigh Adorable.

DENR-6 Regional Director Livino Duran reminded all members of beneficiary organizations of the core aim of the FMP.

“Our job will not end here but this is a continuing activity into the future. We have to learn from the lessons from the FMP so the future generations still have forestlands,” Duran said.
