The city government recently inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Futran Philippines Inc. for the Green People Mover project.
“This game-changing investment is a testament to the power of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in uplifting people’s lives,” said Mayor Jerry Treñas.
The MOU was forwarded to the Iloilo City Council led by presiding officer Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon for confirmation.
During a presentation, Futran President Jose “Joey” Fornier II said the project is 20.7-kilometers (kms) long and is designed to decongest heavy traffic in the capital of Western Visayas.
“With the potential implementation of podcars, we can finally bid farewell to the frustrating traffic and usher in a new era of sustainable commuting," Treñas said.
There are two proposed routes for the podcar transport system.
The first covers 13.3 kms. With 12 stations, it will be from Port of Iloilo to the transport terminal in the boundary of Pavia town.
The second route has 7.4 kms. With seven stations, this will be from Tagbak Transport Terminal in Jaro District to the plaza of Mandurriao District.
Fornier said the project will be energy-efficient as the podcars will utilize solar energy.
