Barangay Ginebra star Jamie Malonzo apologized for his actions after confirming through PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial that he was the one getting beaten up in a video that went viral shortly after Gilas Pilipinas’ victory over Chinese Taipei on Sunday, Feb. 25.
Malonzo said the incident was caused by ‘miscommunication’.
In the viral clip, Malonzo, who seemed to be drunk, was at the short end of a physical altercation as he was seen getting punched and kicked in a still unknown fastfood restaurant. The video was immediately taken down but netizens were quick to get a copy of the clip and was repeatedly shared in social media.
It is still unclear when or where the incident happened since the national team forward also missed the game against Chinese Taipei due to an acute gastroenteritis.
According to Marcial, the Gilas forward was indeed feeling under the weather after testing positive to Covid-19 upon their arrival from Hong Kong.
“He’s sick. It’s a medical thing so I don’t want to talk too much about it,” said Gilas head coach Tim Cone when asked about Malonzo’s absence.
“Actually, he and Justin (Brownlee) were both sick coming home from Hong Kong and we were really afraid that neither of them would play but Justin bounced back. Jamie, we had to contemplate and bring him to the hospital. He’s down and out,” he added.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas or Barangay Ginebra have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident but the two camps involved in the altercation are reportedly already sorting things out.
