PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo confirmed that an unknown entity gained access on the Facebook page of the PCG around 6 p.m.
“Based on the initial diagnostic of the Coast Guard Public Affairs (CGPAS), the unknown entity did not leave any digital traces on the official email address and the mobile phone used by the CGPAS to establish a security key as an additional layer of online protection,” he said.
“The CGPAS monitored two malicious short videos posted on the official Facebook page. However when the CGPAS tried to delete the videos, the service was alerted with a forced switch account notification,” he added.
Balilo said CGPAS personnel were conducting a strategic communication plan workshop when the contents were posted.
He said the CGPAS’ last official access and posting on the page was around 10 a.m. when it covered a maritime incident in Atimonan, Quezon.
As of 6:45 p.m., Balilo said the CGPAS was diagnosing the PCG’s Facebook page and its linked accounts such as the Tanod Baybayin, and the official CGPAS email address.
The PCG's Facebook page has around 968,000 followers as of posting time.
The incident came less than two weeks after the PCG’s X (formerly Twitter) account, which has around 79,700 followers, was hacked by unknown culprits.
Last Feb. 15, the CGPAS monitored and resolved a security breach of an unknown entity on its X account.
In January, the PCG also received an alert from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) regarding a foiled hacking attempt on its website which was traced in China.
