Phivolcs records magnitude 5 quake in Eastern Samar, warns of possible aftershocks
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Eastern Samar at 2:47 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs located the earthquake's epicenter at 25 kilometers (km) southwest of Jipapad, Eastern Samar.
It was initially recorded at 4.8-magnitude in San Jose de Buan, Eastern Samar before it was revised to 5.0-magnitude.
The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 26 km, was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Phivolcs said the tremor was "strong" at Intensity V in JipapadJipapad and Maslog, Eastern Samar.
It was also "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Arteche, Can-Avid, Dolores, Oras, San Policarpo, and Taft, Eastern Samar; Catubig, Gamay, Lapinig, Las Navas, Lope De Vega, and Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar; and City of Calbayog, Gandara, Matuguinao, and San Jose De Buan, Samar.
Meanwhile, it was "weak" at Intensity III in Balangkayan, City of Borongan, Llorente, Maydolong, San Julian, and Sulat, Eastern Samar; Catarman, Mapanas, Mondragon, Palapag, Pambujan, San Isidro, and San Roque, Northern Samar; and Calbiga, City of Catbalogan, Hinabangan, Jiabong, Motiong, Paranas, Pinabacdao, San Jorge, San Sebastian, Santa Margarita, and Tarangnan, Samar.
Moreover, the tremor was "slightly felt" at Intensity II in Balangiga, General Macarthur, Giporlos, Guiuan, Hernani, Lawaan, Mercedes, Quinapondan, and Salcedo, Eastern Samar; Babatngon, Palo, and San Miguel, Leyte; City of Tacloban; Allen, Bobon, Laoang, Lavezares, Rosario, and San Jose, Northern Samar; and Almagro, Basey, Daram, Pagsanghan, Santa Rita, Talalora, Villareal, and Zumarraga, Samar.
Phivolcs' instruments also recorded Intensity II in Villareal, Samar; Dulag, Leyte; and Mapanas, Northern Samar, while Intensity I in Basey, Samar.
Phivolcs warned the public of possible damage to property and aftershocks.
