Gabriela amplifies calls for sovereignty, livelihood in commemoration of EDSA People Power Revolution
Women's organization Gabriela on Sunday, Feb. 25 criticized the government’s efforts to amend the Philippine Constitution, calling them “deceptive” and “out-of-tune,” and reiterated demands for rights, land, livelihood, and sovereignty.

It said it has joined the public march opposing the constitutional amendment in observance of the 38th EDSA People Power Revolution.
"We, women, refuse to dance to the out-of-tune and glaringly deceptive Chacha (Charter change) of Marcos!" Gabriela Secretary-General Clarice Palce said in a statement.
"The people are united in the call for land, livelihood, rights, and sovereignty, not Chacha!" she added.
The group also stressed that the administration ought to prioritize addressing the declining wage rate, increasing cases of unemployment, price increases, lack of social protection, foreign military intervention, and the "deteriorating" state of human rights in the Philippines.
Gabriela added that the changes to the Charter will not fix these problems.
"Mga sirang plaka sa usapin ng Chacha pero sa usapin ng dagdag-sahod puro kontra? (They have been repetitive when it comes to matters on Chacha, but when it comes to wage hike, there were lots of contradictions?)," Palce said.
Gabriela said the rights and sovereignty of Filipinos will be even relinquished if the Chacha successfully pushes through, as the changes to the charter will allow foreign influence to enter the economy.
"The true spirit and history of the EDSA people power revolution is the fight against the oppressive, exploitative, and dictatorial government—this cannot be erased by any disinformation or historical distortion by the Marcoses," Palce said.
