Jonas Sultan suffered a shocking first round loss to less fancied Japanese opponent Riku Masuda in their bantamweight bout in the Ancajas-Inoue undercard at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Filipino fighter crumpled after absorbing a wicked left straight to the body that put an abrupt end to the fight with 50 seconds left in the opening frame.
The 32-year-old Sultan reeled in pain on the canvas and was still able to get up to put up a fight, but referee Michiaki Someya had seen enough to wave off the contest much to the delight of the Japanese crowd.
Masuda improved his record to 4-1 -- his victories all by way of knockout -- while dashing any hopes for Sultan to get another shot at a title eliminator. The Cebuano pugilist fell to a 19-7 record with 7 KOs.
Sultan, who spent training in the US before arriving in Japan two days before the fight, actually looked good in the opening minutes of the contest, not allowing the younger Masuda to easily dictate the fight.
Disaster then came for Sultan when the booming left counter punch landed to his body while unloading a right straight to which Masuda easily parried.
Sultan won his last fight against American Frank Gonzalez which came after his loss to Paul Butler in 2022 when he served as a replacement opponent for John Riel Casimero for the interim WBO bantamweight crown.
