Philippines calls for peaceful settlement of Ukraine-Russia war
The Philippines on Saturday, Feb. 24, reiterated its call for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine-Russia war as it marked its 2nd year anniversary.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Philippines is underscoring the need for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
It has also articulated its principled position on the war-torn country and has consistently supported its sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity by voting in favor of the six resolutions of the UN General Assembly Emergency Special Session on Ukraine, DFA added in a statement.
"The Philippines reiterates its call on concerned Parties to seek a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the conflict," it said.
"We recall the 1982 Manila Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes which reaffirms the principle that all States shall settle their disputes by peaceful means," DFA added.
On Feb. 24, military conflict between Ukraine and Russia ignited anew when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" to "demilitarize and denazify" Ukraine.
President Marcos had repeatedly supported Ukraine in its fight against Russia as he cited the importance of protecting sovereignty and sovereign rights.
"The situation in Ukraine cannot continue and it is something that is really anachronistic in the modern world," Marcos said in a May 2023 forum.
Meanwhile, diplomatic missions in the Philippines also marked the 2nd anniversary of Russian aggression on Ukraine.
Expressing its gratitude to the Philippines for its support, German Ambassador Andres Pfaffernoshke said Berlin will stand with Kyiv for “as long as it takes.”
The ambassadors of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, European Union, Czech Republic, Spain and France, among others, also joined in the commemoration.
“Two years since Russia's invasion, we continue to #StandWithUkraine as brave Ukrainian citizens show that freedom and democracy are worth fighting for,” US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson said in a post on X.
“Two years ago, Putin invaded Ukraine – unleashing unspeakable brutality on the Ukrainian people.Today, the 's support for Ukraine remains unwavering. The world must stand firm for Ukraine’s freedom. In doing so, we stand for our own. #SlavaUkraini,” UK Ambassador Laure Beaufils said.
