The Bureau of Plant Industry (BOI) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) disproved claims that excessively smuggled onions from Holland to Cagayan de Oro affected the local market prices.
Arnold Dela Cruz, BOI Region X officer-in-charge and regional manager debunked on Saturday, Feb. 24, the allegations of onion smuggling. The claims said that the flooded supply lowered the prices in Cagayan.
According to BOI, the Plant Quarantine Office recorded 307.1 metric tons (MT) of local red onion and 17.6 MT of imported white onion made their way to Cagayan de Oro last month, while this month’s onion delivery to Cagayan de Oro had a total of 302.8 MT.
Chinese onion imports, on the other hand, arrived in Davao last December and were transported to a warehouse in Cagayan.
“[There is] 9.66 MT remaining due to slow demand for imported allium. These were based on the domestic plant quarantine permits issued by the plant industry,” Dela Cruz said.
The BOI’s regional office has collaborated with the Department of Agriculture (DA) field office and the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Services (AMAS) to investigate the price and quantity of onions.
According to Dela Cruz, the local and imported onions were delivered from Manila, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, and Nueva Ecija.
Wholesale prices of red onion in Cagayan de Oro City last Thursday were valued at around P50 to P65 per kilo, while white onion was sold for P65 to P70.
“Retail price per kilo of local red onion was between P90 and P170, imported red onion was at P100 while imported white onion was priced between P90 and P180 per kilo,” Dela Cruz added.
Since January 2024, the farm gate price of onion in Luzon has been somewhere around P35 to P55.
Meanwhile, BOI Director Gerard Glenn Panganiban shared that they have been seeking assistance from the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and Bureau of Customs (BOC) to monitor and verify any possible smuggling activities in Cagayan.
The National Plant Quarantine Services Division Office also ensured that they have been monitoring Cagayan de Oro City and other areas to examine the price and supply situation in cold storage facilities and markets.
To further secure support for onion growers, the Agricultural Credit Policy Council partnered with the private sector for possible cold storage and credit assistance for farmers.
Subsequently, the agricultural field office and seed companies initiated an onion derby under the high-value crops program in search of the best seeds to utilize for better onion production.
