Tots Carlos exploded for 19 points highlighted by 17 attacks for the Cool Smashers, who leaned on their wide championship experience to pick up their first victory.
Jema Galanza also provided offensive reinforcements for Creamline by erupting for 13 kills to finish with 15 points, while Jeanette Panaga took charge of their net defense, posting five blocks to finish with 12 points.
The Cool Smashers needed a little over two hours to outhustle the Foxies as they tried to regain their bearings following a series of erratic plays. Overall, they gave up 31 points on unforced errors.
Despite its firepower, Creamline hardly beat Farm Fresh in spikes, 62-57, but the Cool Smashers, behind Panaga, dominated the net, finishing with 11 blocks against the Foxies’ three.
The Foxies, who finished 10th in a 12-team field in the previous AFC, staged a big comeback in the opening set, rallying from three points down and saving an unprecedented 11 set points.
The turning point came when the Foxies reached match point for the first time at 35-34, capitalizing on a Creamline double-contact miscue. Seizing the rare opportunity, Bertolano delivered a decisive ace to clinch the set in 45 minutes, highlighting the Foxies’ unwavering stand in a duel filled with powerful hits, fierce exchanges and breathtaking saves.
Creamline was also able to douse Farm Fresh’s offensive fire spearheaded by Trisha Tubu and Kate Santiago, who conspired for 28 of the team’s 57 attacks.
Tubu pumped in 18 points while Santiago uncorked 11 points in a futile attempt for Farm Fresh as it failed to sustain its hot start.
