Communist rebel killed in Cagayan clash

A New People’s Army rebel was killed in an encounter with the military in Sitio Laoc, Barangay Pateng, Gonzaga, Cagayan on Friday, February 23.

THE military engaged New People's Army rebels in Sallapadan, Abra and Gonzaga, Cagayan.

The 502nd Infantry Brigade encountered remaining members of the Cagayan Valley Regional Committee led by Edgar Arbitrario, an NPA leader from Mindanao. The gun battle lasted for 10 minutes before the communist rebels withdrew.

A soldier was wounded in the gunbattle and is now in stable condition.

Recovered from the encounter site were an M14 rifle with a magazine, subversive documents, and personal belongings.

Meanwhile, the 50th Infantry Battalion of the 503rd Infantry Brigade clashed with the North Abra Guerrilla Committee of the Ilocos Cordillera Regional Committee (ICRC) in Barangay Naguilian, Sallapadan, Abra.

No injuries or fatalities from the military were recorded in the 10-minute gunfight.

The military has urged remaining members of the communist movement in Northern Luzon to return to the fold of the law.
