How these cassava biobags contribute to creating a greener future

Sustainability has become a pressing concern not only for environmental advocates but also for businesses aiming to contribute to a sustainable future. One of AKO Packaging's notable products is the cassava biobag. Derived from cassava starch, these biobags offer a biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based plastic bags, aligning with the global push toward reducing plastic waste. 

According to co-founder Nikki Sevilla, the production of cassava biobags plays a crucial role in curbing plastic usage, with the ultimate goal of achieving zero plastic use by 2050. 

"By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Skipping some plastic items can make a difference. Together, we can create a greener future for the Philippines," Sevillla said. 

Beyond its business endeavors, AKO Packaging actively supports local government initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste. 

In a notable example, cassava biobags were utilized during the #BasuraToAyuda Program in Brgy. San Antonio, Pasig in 2022. These bags were used as packaging material for rice distributed to the community, demonstrating AKO Packaging's commitment to practical environmental action at the grassroots level. 

The importance of cassava production cannot be overstated. With the Philippine Statistics Authority reporting a 1.6 percent growth in cassava production from April to June 2023 compared to the previous year, cassava represents a valuable resource with immense potential. AKO Packaging harnesses this potential to contribute meaningfully to the shift toward sustainable packaging solutions.
