The El Niño phenomenon may cause the northeast monsoon season to end earlier this year, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Friday, Feb. 23.
PAGASA-Climate and Agrometeorology Division Assistant Weather Services Chief Ana Liza Solis said based on its monitoring, the “termination” of the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” season may occur before March 21.
“We have observed that the northeast monsoon season is ending earlier than it did on March 21 last year (2023),” Solis said in Filipino in a televised public briefing.
“We will still experience slightly cooler weather due to the northest monsoon around the beginning of March, but by the middle of the month, we may be declaring the end of the amihan season,” she added.
Solis warned of warmer-than-average temperatures in the coming months due to El Niño and the end of the amihan season.
