5th Philippine Silk Summit to showcase skills of local weavers
The 5th Philippine Silk Summit is set to feature a showcase of local weavers' skills that will emphasize the importance of sustainable practices in the silk value industry on Feb. 29.

In a statement issued on Friday, Feb. 23, the summit, which will be held in Cagayan de Oro, is organized by the Department of Science and Technology's Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI).
It will feature the SEDA Pilipinas Exhibition's traditional weaving techniques as well as contemporary fashion pieces made from silk.
DOST said they will highlight the "versatility" of the material while emphasizing its cultural and economic significance in the region.
Under the theme, "Spinning Innovations for Philippine Silk," it will also bring together public and private stakeholders in the industry to address challenges and develop strategies for growth and sustainability.
According to DOST, the importance of sustainable practices will be emphasized as visitors gain insights into the silk production value chain,
New innovation hub
The department pointed out that one of the highlights of the summit is the launch of the new Silk Innovation Hub in Misamis Oriental, the first such facility in Mindanao.
The facility is equipped with machinery to process silk from cocoons to silk yarn, the hub represents a crucial milestone in decentralizing and expanding regional capacity for Philippine silk.
The DOST-PTRI will now have three established hubs, with the other areas in Northern Mindanao and Western Visayas.
