VM Yul showcases avant-garde-inspired artworks in Escolta

Manila Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto showcased his avant-garde artistic side in his "Directions IV Solo Art Exhibit" at The Art District, Calvo Building in Escolta, Manila.

Directions IV is an annual solo art exhibit of Vice Mayor Yul to celebrate National Arts Month in February.

The art exhibit was curated by Lucas Nieto, and designed by Louis Nieto. 

It is open to the public from February 17 to March 16.

Nieto had successfully held four art exhibitions: Directions I in Pinto Art Museum, Directions II in Manila Hotel, and Directions III in Bulwagang Rodriguez in Manila City Hall.

The proceeds of the exhibits were all donated to charitable institutions.

“The key to the future lies in the past”, said Nieto in describing his unique visual contemporary artworks made from scrap metals like brass, copper, stainless steel, and automotive paints.

His art pieces depict a bird’s eye view of maps, showing different roads, bodies of water, and bridges in Manila.

In Directions IV, Nieto portrays his astonishment at how routes can have different meanings to people taking them regularly, even if sometimes detours are necessary.

His artworks show three-dimensional maps and dynamic urbanism in Manila. 

Nieto hopes that his lively and provoking art style will go a long way to highlight Manila as a metropolis and a melting point where its culture, economy, history, wealth, power, and innovations continue to evolve.

He said art for him is personal as he sees it as an extension of his ideas, inspirations, and aspirations in life.
