“Saludo ako sa kwento ng katapangan at kabayanihang ipinakita ni Sgt. Tapinit at mga kasamahan niya na nasawi at nasugatan (I salute the story of courage and heroism that Sgt. Tapinit and his fellow slain and wounded soldiers showed),” she wrote in a Facebook post.
“Nagpapasalamat po ako sa pamilya ni Sgt. Tapinit sa kanyang serbisyo na ibinigay para sa ating bayan (I thank the family of Sgt. Tapinit for his service to the country),” the official added.
His death, she said, should serve as a reminder that the threat of terrorism is real and that it doesn’t choose its victims.
“Tandaan din natin ang panganib ng pangangalap ng kabataan sa terorismo (Let us also remember the dangers that terrorism post in recruiting the youth),” Duterte added.
Her Facebook post showed photos of the wake, with the Vice President talking to the Tapinit’s family and even taking a selfie with a child.
She also stood before his coffin, which has the Philippine flag on top.
Mary Grace Dumdum, in a separate post, thanked the Vice President for her visit.
“Daghang salamat (Thank you very much), Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, for coming here in Maranding, Lala, Lanao del Norte aron sa pagbisita sa sundalong namatay sa enkwentro na si (to visit the soldier who died in the encounter) Cpl. Reland Tapinit,” she said.
An advisory released by her office said Duterte was also scheduled to pay her last respects to Private James Porras in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
The Vice President also visited the Adventist Medical Center in Iligan City and the Camp Evangelista Station Hospital in Cagayan de Oro City where the injured soldiers were currently being treated.
In a statement, the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division said six military personnel from the 44th Infantry Battalion and at least three suspected Maute members were killed in an operation last Feb. 18.
The operation is part of the continuing efforts to neutralize the perpetrators of the Mindanao State University (MSU) bombing on Dec. 3 last year.
