Man 'high on drugs' stays on top of coconut tree for 24 hours


CEBU CITY — Claiming someone was out to kill him, a 32-year-old man perched on top of a coconut tree for more than 24 hours  in Barangay Panadtaran, Argao town, southern Cebu.

Police said that according to relatives, the man was believed to be high on illegal drugs when he went up the tree.

His relatives told police that he got hooked on illegal drugs.

Police said that the man climbed the tree at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20. The man appeared distressed and was talking to himself when he climbed the tree.

Despite repeated pleas from his relatives and rescuers, he did not go down as he claimed that there were five persons who chased and tried to kill him.

He decided to go down a day later at 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 22.

Police Major Ivy Bartolome, chief of the Argao Police Station, said he was immediately brought to a drug rehabilitation center in the town.

His family  appealed to the police to bring him to a rehabilitation center.

Bartolome said  was calm and very weak when he went down from the tree.

She said the incident should serve as a warning on the ill-effects of illegal drugs.
