Police arrested five individuals for stealing P750,000 worth of underground copper cable wires of a telecommunications firm in Barangay Mansilingan.
The suspects were wearing reflective clothing, using traffic cones, and disguised as linemen conducting maintenance activity using FINSI access pass and work permit when police were conducting mobile patrol in the area.
"We want to make it clear that the suspects arrested in illegal activities in Bacolod City on February 17 are not from FINSI," said company General Manager Marc Kerveillant.
Kerveillant said they strongly condemn such actions, saying that cable theft undermines the core of FINSI’s work, which is to provide services that enable reliable connectivity.
“By stealing critical network assets, these thieves are also robbing customers of the ideal connectivity experience that companies like FINSI work so hard to ensure,” he added.
FINSI lauded the swift action of the police in apprehending the suspects and assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. It looks forward to the prompt prosecution of the suspects as the company believes bringing such cases to justice is crucial in deterring future incidents.
The firm stressed that it is committed to maintaining the integrity of its operations and will take all necessary measures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
Police Capt. Andy Ofalia, head of Police Station 7, said that the dump truck used by the suspects to extract the cable wires from the manhole was owned by the husband of a barangay official in Bago City, Negros Occidental. However, based on their investigation, the dump truck owner has no participation in the incident.
He said that according to the owner, the vehicle was being used in a quarry. But his cousin asked permission from him to use the vehicle as someone wanted to rent it for a day for P5,000 for a transaction which he did not bother to ask.
Ofalia said that the owner only learned about the incident when he failed to reach his cousin after several calls as the vehicle was needed in the quarry that day.
Prior to the incident, Ofalia said the suspects stayed in a lodging house in Barangay Taculing here for about five days to probably prepare and plan their activity.
He said they could not establish yet if these suspects were hired by someone as they refused to provide other details.
Robbery charges have been filed against the suspects and three other persons who are at large.
