The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is gearing efforts to accelerate investments in the electric vehicles (EV) sector through its partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

DTI Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual and UNIDO Philippine Representative Teddy Monroy sealed their partnership for the "Accelerating Adoption and Scale-up Electric Mobility for Low-Carbon City Development in the Philippines" or E-Mobility ASAP project through a signing ceremony on Friday, Feb. 23.

The initiative is being implemented primarily by the
Clean Air Asia Consortium composed of the Electric Vehicles Association of the Philippines (EVAP), Urban Electric Initiative, and the De La Salle University, with the cooperation of the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

On the part of the DTI, the project will involve strategic approaches to drive and attract investors to develop the domestic EV market, and facilitate a green business landscape in the country.

"We boldly position the Philippines as a regional leader in clean energy solutions an sustainable transportation manufacturing. This is our vision to have a full value chain for electric vehicles, starting from the processing of nickel ores, producing battery precursor, manufacturing the batteries themselves, building the components, and eventually assembling and producing e-vehicles right here in the Philippines with partners if needed," said Pascual.

The agency stated that it will focus on creating business and policy environments that are conducive to generating investments for EV deployment, charging infrastructure powered by RE, and development of viable e-mobility business models for two-wheelers and public utility vehicles (PUVs).

"With the support of our esteemed government partners, such as the DOE and DOTr, we are driven to acclerate our efforts to bolster our EV sector," Pascual added.

This recent E-Mobility ASAP project is a part of the $3.8 million E-Mobility project launched in 2022. It will involve the deployment of EVs in three key pilot areas that have yet to be announced by the agency.

The project will run from 2022 to 2027.
