A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur at 7:43 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs located the quake's epicenter four kilometers (km) northwest of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur.
The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 49 km, was tectonic or caused by the movement of an active fault near the area, said Phivolcs.
It said the earthquake was "weak" at Intensity III in the City of Butuan and Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, while it was "slightly felt" at Intensity II in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
It was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Boston, Davao Oriental and Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the tremor at Intensity III in Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental and Intensity I in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro.
It said no damage to property nor aftershocks are expected.
