3 soldiers, militiaman hurt in Negros clashes

BACOLOD CITY – Three soldiers and a Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) Active Auxiliary (CAA) member were wounded in encounters in Sitio Mansulao, Barangay Pinapugasan, Escalante City, Negros Occidental on February 21 and 22.

Lt. Col. J-jay Javines, spokesperson of the 3rd Infantry Division, said they are now in stable condition in a hospital.

Three New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in the first encounter with the 79th Infantry Battalion (IB) on Wednesday, February 21. However, the Army has yet to identify the fatalities – two male and a female.

Javines said the encounter broke out at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday followed by a second at around 2 p.m. against eight remnants of the dismantled Northern Negros Front (NNF-D).

The following day, another firefight occurred around 6 a.m., he added.

The series of encounters was a result of information from the community on the presence of an armed group conducting extortion activities in the area.

Soldiers recovered from the encounter site an AK47 rifle, an M653 rifle, a .45 caliber firearm, rifle grenades, anti-personnel mine, assorted cellular phones, commercial radios, bandoliers, combat bag packs, and subversive documents.

Lt. Col. Arnel Calaoagan, 79th IB commander, said these encounters have significantly shaken the surviving remnants of the dismantled NNF who are trying to regain their forces in northern Negros.

"It's just unfortunate that another lives were wasted, fighting for a senseless cause,” Calaoagan said.

He vowed that they will remain steadfast in their commitment to sustain the gains and be relentless in ensuring the safety and security of the people of Negros. “We will not put our guards down.”

Major Gen. Marion Sison, 3rd ID commander, said that their relentless combat operations persist and aim to decisively end insurgency and bring about the shared vision of liberating Negros Island from the shackles of insurgency.
