Spanish shipbuilding firms keen on modernizing Philippine domestic ships

Two shipbuilding companies based in Spain expressed interest to develop the Philippines' maritime industry through the sharing of knowledge on shipbuilding technologies.
Maritime Industry Administration (Marina) Administrator Sonia Malaluan met with the executives of Astilleros Gondan Shipbuilders led by its owner and chairman, Alvaro Platero; and Cintranaval headed by its chairman, Guillermo Martin, at the agency's headquarters in Manila on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
"This meeting highlights Marina's pivotal role as a catalyst for international partnerships and investments in the Philippine maritime sector. By facilitating discussions with shipbuilders, Marina aims to drive economic growth, enhance infrastructure, and promote job creation," Malaluan said.
During the meeting, Astilleros Gondan Shipbuilders showcased its high-standard quality ships and facilities in its shipyards, "emphasizing its commitment to excellence."

Astilleros Gondan Shipbuilders said its shipyard is based in Asturias, Spain with more than 90 years of experience in building different types of passenger vessels; offshore energy vessels; trawlers, live fish carriers, freezing long liners, and other fishing and aquaculture vessels; fishery and oceanographic research and training vessels; patrol boats, offshore patrol vessels, and landing craft; and tugboats.
Meanwhile, Cintranaval has presented its ships and the engineering solutions it provides to its clients. The company said it has carried out projects for over 600 ships intended for shipowners from more than 30 countries since its inception in 1964.

Cintranaval said it specializes on designing fishing vessels, offshore support and emergency response and rescue vessels, patrol boats and multi-purpose defense vessels, tugboats and workboats, merchant vessels such as cargo and passenger ships, and pleasure boats such as luxury yachts.
Malaluan stressed the importance of collaborating with established shipbuilders as she discussed the agency's campaign towards modernizing the country's domestic ships and fishing vessels.
Further, she invited the shipbuilding companies to participate in the upcoming events such as the third National Shipyards Convention in Cebu City on April 16 to 17; and the ninth PHILMARINE 2024 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City on June 19 to 21 to further showcase their technologies and offerings.
